Day 12: Indulge Your Guilty Pleasures

Guilty pleasures are one of the necessities of the human experience. They take us to our happy place; even if it’s only for a fleeting moment. Life is hard; we need these moments. I have a more than a few guilty pleasures and many of them revolve around food; I’m sure I’m not the only one:

  • Cake. Now that our nanny makes it too, I never stop eating it. (*Note to self – I must get back to the gym…) I love to go out for coffee and cake too. It seems so indulgent to sit in a coffee shop – with a book or a writing pad if I’m sans baby – and sip my cappuccino while devouring a slice of something sweet. I blame my mother for that vice.
  • A Thai or Indian takeaway. There’s nothing more comforting than walking into a curry house and the aroma of spices wafting into my nostrils knowing that, in less than 20 minutes the flavours will hit my stomach. In fact, when I lived in London, it got to the point that I’d indulge in an Indian takeout most Fridays – if I wasn’t out drinking cocktails of course… (another guilty pleasure)!
  • English food items from the supermarket. They are expensive and are usually unhealthy hence the guilt. I buy them anyway because we all need Yorkshire Tea, Hobnobs and Cadbury’s fingers in our lives.

  • Binge-worthy TV shows. At one point it was Jane The Virgin. When I was breastfeeding and the baby was up at all hours it was Gilmore Girls. Currently, it’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
  • Good British dramas. Luther; both Idris Elba and the show… Broadchurch and Sherlock were some of my favourites.
  • Writing. it takes time away from the chores I should be doing and the baby I should be entertaining, but it’s my time and I love it.
  • Getting my hair washed at the salon. I wonder if, perhaps, I enjoy these a little more than I should, but I look forward to those head massages for weeks!
  • Buying clothes from Stitch Fix. I hate clothes shopping and I’m not very good at it. Occasionally I choose something decent, but mostly I wander around the shops feeling uncomfortable, overwhelmed and bored. To save me from this trauma, I decided to sign up to Stitch Fix. They don’t always get it right, but it still feels like Christmas when the box arrives!

IMG_7012I think (actually, I hope) everyone has a guilty pleasure or two otherwise, what’s the point of life? I feel sure even those perfectly fit and clean-eating junkies on Instagram dig into bowls of Ben & Jerry’s and swig a couple of whiskeys after a gym session occasionally.

My question is: why do we feel ‘guilty’ about such pleasures? We work hard, support our families and live by society’s rules – most of the time. Why should we feel guilty for enjoying some of the simple pleasures in life in food, alcohol, massages and frivolous spending once in a while? I think we should have cake, watch crap TV and read trashy magazines if it’s what makes us smile. We deserve it.

What are your guilty pleasures??? Don’t hold back…
